Privacy Policy

Overview

FineAppeal.com.au ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how it is handled when you use our parking fine appeal letter service.

The short version: we collect very little, we do not create user accounts, and your personal details (name, address, penalty notice number) are entered by you in your browser and never sent to our servers.

1. What Data We Collect

Data you provide during the appeal process

During the guided appeal process, you select a state, council, offence type, and describe your circumstances. This information is used to generate your appeal letter and is stored temporarily on our servers solely for that purpose. It is not linked to any personal identifier.

Email address

If you provide an email address at checkout (via Stripe), it is used solely to send you a retrieval code for your letter. We do not add you to any mailing list, and we do not use your email for marketing purposes. Emails are sent via Resend.

Personal details in the letter

The appeal letter contains placeholder fields (your name, address, penalty notice number, vehicle registration, etc.) that you fill in directly in your browser. These details are never transmitted to our servers. They exist only in your browser and on the printed page.

Payment information

All payments are processed by Stripe. We do not see, store, or have access to your full credit card number. Stripe may collect data in accordance with their own privacy policy.

2. What We Store

We store the following on our servers:

  • The generated appeal letter text (with placeholder fields, not your personal details).
  • A retrieval code that allows you to access your letter again.
  • The Stripe session ID to verify payment and prevent duplicate generation.
  • Anonymous usage data (state, council, and offence type selections) for improving the service.

We do not store your name, address, phone number, vehicle registration, penalty notice number, or any other personal details entered into the letter editor.

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Stripe — payment processing. Stripe processes your card details securely. See Stripe's Privacy Policy.
  • Resend — email delivery. Used to send your retrieval code. See Resend's Privacy Policy.
  • Anthropic (Claude) — AI letter generation. Your appeal details (state, council, offence, circumstances) are sent to Anthropic's API to generate the appeal letter. No personal identifying information is included. See Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

We do not sell, share, or provide your data to any other third party, except as required by law.

4. Cookies

FineAppeal.com.au does not use cookies for tracking or analytics. We do not use Google Analytics or any similar tracking service. Stripe may set cookies during the payment process as part of their fraud prevention. Your browser's local storage is used to cache your letter for convenience (so it survives page refreshes) — this data stays on your device and is not sent to us.

5. Data Retention

Generated appeal letters and retrieval codes are retained on our servers for 90 days to allow you to retrieve your letter if needed. After 90 days, letter data may be permanently deleted. Anonymous usage statistics may be retained indefinitely.

6. Your Rights

Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:

  • Request access to any personal information we hold about you.
  • Request correction or deletion of your personal information.
  • Make a complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) if you believe your privacy has been breached.

In practice, because we do not collect personal identifying information (no accounts, no names, no addresses on our servers), there is very little personal data we could hold about you.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
